ঘটক

ঘটক এর আভিধানিক অর্থ ’ঘটনার সংঘটয়িতা।’ উইকিপিডিয়ার মতে, বরপক্ষ ও কনেপক্ষের মধ্যে যোগাযোগ স্থাপন করে বিয়ে সম্পাদনে মধ্যস্থতাকারী ব্যক্তিই হচ্ছেন ঘটক। ঘটক এবং ঘটকালি পেশা ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের সময়কাল থেকে চলে আসছে। অতীতে বাঙালি সমাজে যুবক-যুবতীদের অবাধ মেলামেশার কোনো সুযোগ ছিল না। তখন পূর্বপরিচয়-সূত্রে ছেলে ও মেয়ের নিজেদের ইচ্ছায় বিয়ের ব্যাপারটা সমাজিক বিধি-নিষেধের পরিপন্থী বলে গণ্য হতো। তাই সেই সময়টাতে ঘটকের মাধ্যমে বিয়ে ঠিক হওয়ার রীতি ছিল বহুল প্রচলিত এবং এজন্য সমাজে একজন ঘটক এর গুরুত্বও ছিল অনেক।

দাম্পত্য জীবন শুরু হয় নারী এবং পুরুষের একসাথে বসবাসের মধ্য দিয়ে। একজন নারী এবং পুরুষ একসাথে থাকার যে সামাজিক এবং আইনি বৈধতা পায় বিয়ের মাধ্যমে। এবং এই বিয়ে সংঘটন করাটা সহজ ব্যাপার নয়। শারীরিক গঠন বা গায়ের রং, সাংসারিক আয়-উন্নতি, সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক অবস্থান, বংশমর্যাদা এই সবকিছু ‍মিলিয়ে পাত্র-পাত্রী মিল করা বেশ দুঃসাধ্য একটা ব্যাপার। এই দুঃসাধ্য কাজটি করে থাকেন ঘটকরা। তবে একসময় ঘটক সাহেবদের সবাই একনামে চিনলেও এখন আর তেমন হাঁকডাক নেই।

ঘটকালি পেশা

অতীতে শুধুমাত্র শিক্ষিত ও সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তিরাই ঘটকালি-কে পেশা হিসেবে নিতেন । তখনকার সময়ে বাংলাদেশে বিভিন্ন সম্প্রদায়ের পেশাদার ঘটক ছিল, আর তাদের মধ্যে  ব্রাহ্মণ ঘটকের সংখ্যাই ছিল বেশী। ঘটকরা পাত্র-পাত্রীর বংশ, গোত্র, পারিবারিক তথ্য সংগ্রহ, সংরক্ষণ ও সরবরাহের মাধ্যমে সমাজের একটি গুরুদায়িত্ব পালন করতেন। অনেকেই শুধুমাত্র ঘটকালি করেই জীবিকা নির্বাহ করতেন।

সময়ের সাথে সাথে ঘটকালি পেশার রূপ বদলেছে, ঘটক এর দায়দায়িত্বেও অনেক পরিবর্তন এসেছে। তিরিশ বছর আগেও গ্রাম-গঞ্জে চোখে পড়তো ঘটক মুখে পান নিয়ে ছাতা বগলে হেঁটে চলেছেন গ্রামের পর গ্রাম; আর সজাগ দৃষ্টি রাখছেন কার বাড়িতে রয়েছে বিবাহযোগ্য ছেলে বা মেয়ে।

ঘটকের প্রধান কাজই হচ্ছে মেয়ের বাড়িতে ছেলের আয়-উন্নতি এবং ছেলের পরিবারের বংশমর্যাদা ও গুণ-গরিমা প্রকাশ করা, আর ছেলের বাড়িতে মেয়ের রূপসৌন্দর্য ও শিক্ষা-দীক্ষা তুলে ধরা। এভাবেই ঘটক দুটি পরিবারকে বিয়ের ব্যাপারে আগ্রহী করে তোলেন। ঘটকের মাধ্যমে পছন্দের পর্বটি শেষ হলে বিয়ের কথাবার্তা ও চূড়ান্ত হয় বিয়ের দিনক্ষণ। আর ঘটক এর মাধ্যমে বিয়ে পাকাপোক্ত হলে তিনি পান উপযুক্ত সম্মানী, ছেলে বা মেয়ের পক্ষ থেকে নগদ টাকা, কখনওবা সঙ্গে জামাকাপড় এবং আরও কিছু বকশিশ।

আদর্শ জীবনসঙ্গী খুঁজতে

ঘটক সাহেবদের বর্তমান অবস্থা

ঘটক এবং ঘটকালি পেশা দুটোই বর্তমানে বিলুপ্তপ্রায়। বিয়ের ক্ষেত্রে এখন ঘটকের আর তেমন প্রয়োজন পড়ছে না, তাই পেশাও বদলে নিয়েছেন অনেক ঘটক। এখনকার মেয়েরা ছেলেদের মতই উচ্চশিক্ষায় শিক্ষিত হচ্ছে। বিয়ের জন্য পাত্র পছন্দের ক্ষেত্রেও তার নিজেদের মতামত জানানোর সুযোগ পাচ্ছে। অ্যারেঞ্জ ম্যারেজের চেয়ে লাভ ম্যারেজ এখন অনেক বেড়ে গেছে। সমাজে কিছু কিছু ক্ষেত্রে নিজেরা পছন্দ করে পরিবারের মতামতের বিরুদ্ধে গিয়ে বিয়ে হচ্ছে। তাই এখন ঘটকের প্রয়োজনীয়তা বহুলাংশে হ্রাস পেয়েছে।

এখন বিভিন্ন পত্রিকার বিজ্ঞাপন পাতায় চোখ বোলালেই দেখতে পাবেন বেশীরভাগ অভিভাবক নিজেরাই তাদের ছেলে-মেয়েদের বিয়ের জন্য উপযুক্ত পাত্র বা পাত্রী চেয়ে বিজ্ঞাপন দিচ্ছেন। এতে করে ছেলে-মেয়ে আর তাদের পরিবারের লোকজন নিজেরাই বিয়ের দেখাশোনা পর্বটি সেরে ফেলায় আর ঘটকের প্রয়োজন পড়ছে না। পেশাগত ঘটক এখন আর নেই বললেই চলে।

ঘটকালি পেশার সীমাবদ্ধতা

ঘটকালি পেশা বিলুপ্তির পেছনে কিন্তু অনেকগুলো কারণও রয়েছে। আগেকার ট্রেডিশন অনুযায়ী বিয়ের জন্য ঘটকের মাধ্যমে পাত্র-পাত্রী দেখার মধ্যে অনেক সীমাবদ্ধতা ছিলো। প্রথমত একজন প্রফেশনাল ঘটকের কাছে পাত্র-পাত্রীর তথ্য জানান দেয়ার সময়ই গুণতে হয় মোটা অঙ্কের কিছু টাকা। এরপর একজন ট্রেডিশনাল ঘটক স্বভাবতই বিভিন্ন অসঙ্গতির কারণে নির্দিষ্ট একটি এলাকার বাইরে পাত্র-পাত্রী খুঁজতে পারতেন না। একজন একজন ঘটকের কাছে ৮-১০টির বেশী পাত্র-পাত্রীর ছবি পাওয়া যায় না। এতে করে পাত্র-পাত্রী দেখার জন্য যেমন লম্বা সময় অপেক্ষা করতে হয়, তেমনি প্রত্যেকবার পাত্র-পাত্রীর ছবি দেখার বিনিময়ে গুণতে হয় ভালো অঙ্কের টাকা।

তাছাড়া একজন ঘটকের কাছে পাত্র-পাত্রীর যে তথ্যগুলো থাকে তা কতটুকু গ্রহণযোগ্য, সেটার সত্যতা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন থেকেই যায়। কারণ একজন ঘটক নিজেই কখনো তার মক্কেলের দেয়া তথ্যগুলোর সত্যতা যাচাই করার দায়িত্ব নেয় না। ট্রেডিশনাল ঘটক তার কাছে থাকা সীমিত বায়োডাটার মধ্যেই পাত্র-পাত্রীর খোঁজার জন্য অভিভাবকদের চাপ দিতে থাকে। আর চাপে পড়ে অনেক সময়েই অভিভাবকরা ভুল ডিসিশন নেন যার ফলাফল ভুগতে হয় তাদের নিজেদের সন্তানদেরকেই।

ঘটকের আধুনিক রূপ
