যার সঙ্গে সারা জীবন যাপন করতে হবে, হুট করে তার সঙ্গে বিবাহবন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হওয়া যায় না। বিয়ের কিছু রীতিনীতি আছে। বিয়েকে ঘিরে দেশে দেশে চালু আছে নানা সংস্কৃতি, রেওয়াজ, আচার-অনুষ্ঠান। আসুন, সেসব আচার অনুষ্ঠানের সঙ্গে পরিচিত হওয়া যাক।

বিয়ের প্রাথমিক কথাবার্তা চলে মূলত ঘটকের মাধ্যমে। বর ও কনেপক্ষের মধ্যে মধ্যস্থতা করে ঘটক। বর্তমানে কেউ কেউ আত্মীয়তার সূত্রে কখনো কখনো ঘটকের দায়িত্ব পালন করে। শহর এলাকায়, বিশেষত ঢাকায়, এখন ঘটকালির উদ্দেশে বেশ কটি প্রতিষ্ঠান গড়ে উঠেছে। তা ছাড়া বর্তমানে অনেকেই পূর্ব পরিচয়সূত্রে পরিণয়াবদ্ধ হচ্ছে। পেশাদার ঘটক না থাকলেও গ্রামাঞ্চলে এখনও অনেকেই এ দায়িত্ব পালন করে থাকে। তাদেরকে বলা হয় ‘রায়বার’ বা ‘বিয়ের দালাল’ বা ‘উকিল’। এদের কাছ থেকে কনের নাম-ঠিকানা ইত্যাদি সংগ্রহ করে নেয় কনেপক্ষ। গোপনে তারা বরের পরিবারের জাতপাত ও সহায়-সম্পদের খোঁজখবর নেয়। তারপর ঘটকের মাধ্যমে বাজারের হোটেলে বা অন্য কোথাও বরপক্ষের সঙ্গে প্রাথমিক কথাবার্তা হয়। অনেক ক্ষেত্রে হবু বরকেও দেখা হয়। বর পছন্দ ও পরিবার মনঃপূত হলে পাত্রীপক্ষ ঘটকের মাধ্যমে কনে দেখার তারিখ জানিয়ে দেয়।

আপনি যাকে বিয়ে করবেন, বিয়ের আগে তাকে দেখতে হবে, তার সম্পর্কে জানতে হবে। এই দেখা ও জানাকেই বলা হয় ‘কনে দেখা’ বা ‘পাত্রী দেখা’। এটিও বিয়েকেন্দ্রিক একটি সংস্কৃতি। এটি শুধু বাংলাদেশে নয়, বিশ্বব্যাপী প্রচলিত।

প্রাচীনকালে বাংলার গ্রামসমাজে বর কর্তৃক কনে দেখার নিয়ম ছিল না। বরের অভিভাবকই কনে দেখতে যেতেন। অভিভাবক বলতে বাবা-মা, চাচা- জেঠা, বড় ভাই বা ভাবি। বিশেষত বরের বাবা-মা নিকটাত্মীয়দের নিয়ে কনের বাড়ি গিয়ে কনেকে দেখে আসত। কনে নির্বাচনপর্ব সম্পূর্ণভাবে অভিভাবকদের জ্ঞান, রুচি, অভিজ্ঞতা ও অভিমতের দ্বারা স্থির হতো। হিন্দু সমাজে ‘ছাত্নাতলা’র ‘শুভদৃষ্টি’র অনুষ্ঠানে এবং মুসলমান সমাজের ‘বাসর ঘরে’ বর-বধূ প্রথম পরস্পরকে দেখার সুযোগ পেত। এর আগে কোনো অবস্থাতেই নয়। অভিভাবকের পছন্দ-অপছন্দের ওপর বরকে রাখতে হতো পূর্ণ বিশ্বাস ও আস্থা। তারা যাকে ইচ্ছা ছেলের বউ করে ঘরে তুলবে, বরের মতামতের কোনো গুরুত্ব ছিল না। রক্ষণশীল মুসলিম ও হিন্দু পরিবারে এখনো যে এমন নিয়ম চালু নেই তা নয়। আছে। তবে আগের তুলনায় কম। এখনো পরিচিতদের মধ্যে দু-চার জন পাওয়া যাবে যারা বাসর রাতের আগে স্ত্রীকে দেখার সুযোগ পাননি। তেমন একজনের কাছে জানতে চেয়েছিলাম, ‘যার সঙ্গে সারা জীবন কাটাবেন, তাকে না দেখেই কবুল বলে ফেললেন?’ জবাবে তিনি বলেছিলেন, ‘কী করব? বাবা-মায়ের বাধ্য সন্তান আমি। তাদের কথার বাইরে গিয়ে কোনোদিন কিছু করিনি। তারা যাকে পছন্দ করেছেন তাকে বিয়ে করা ছাড়া উপায় ছিল না।

সময়ের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সংস্কৃতিরও পরিবর্তন হয়। শুধু অভিভাবক কর্তৃক কনে দেখার সংস্কৃতিরও পরিবর্তন হলো পরবর্তীকালে। কনে দেখার কাজে যুক্ত করা হলো বরকেও। শুধু দেখা নয়, তার মতামতকেও গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হতে লাগল। সেই ধারা এখন প্রায় প্রতিষ্ঠিত বলা চলে। গ্রামবাংলায় এই কনে দেখার অনুষ্ঠানকে বলা হতো ‘পানচিনি’। এখনো বলা হয়। কেন এই নাম? কারণ আছে। কারো বাড়িতে অতিথি হিসেবে গেলে উপহার হিসেবে সঙ্গে কিছু নেওয়াটা বাংলার চিরায়ত রীতি। প্রাচীনকালে তো আজকের মতো এত এত খাবার-দাবার ছিল না। এখন যেমন কারো বাড়িতে বেড়াতে যাওয়ার সময় সঙ্গে মিষ্টি জাতীয় কিছু নেওয়াটা রেওয়াজে পরিণত হয়েছে, তখন তো মিষ্টিরও প্রচলন ছিল না। ছিল পান-সুপারি আর চিনি-বাতাসা। এ দেশের কৃষি সভ্যতার ধারক অস্ট্রিক গোষ্ঠীর লোকেরা বিলাস-ব্যসন ও উৎসব-অনুষ্ঠানে পান-সুপারি ব্যবহার করত। কালে কালে ধর্ম ও সম্প্রদায় ভেদে বিভিন্ন উপলক্ষে এর উপযোগিতা ও কার্যকারিতা প্রসার পায়। প্রাচীনকাল থেকেই পান-সুপারি বাঙালির সংস্কৃতির অন্যতম অনুষঙ্গ হিসেবে চলে আসছে। সেকালে কারো বাড়িতে বেড়াতে যাওয়ার সময় সঙ্গে পান-সুপারি নেওয়াটা ছিল রেওয়াজ। বরপক্ষ প্রথম যখন কনেকে দেখতে যেত সঙ্গে নিতো পান-সুপারি আর চিনি-বাতাসা। এই পান-চিনি থেকেই কনে দেখার অনুষ্ঠানের নাম দেওয়া হয় ‘পানচিনি’ বা ‘পানচিনির দাওয়াত’। এটি ঠিক আচার নয়, একে লৌকিকতা হিসেবে গণ্য করা যায়। অঞ্চল বিশেষ ‘পাকা দেখা’ অনুষ্ঠানকেও ‘পানচিনি’ বলা হয়ে থাকে। কনের অভিভাবকের ঘরে অনুষ্ঠিত হতো বলে এবং এর মাধ্যমে বর-কনে নির্বাচনের পালা সমাপ্ত হতো বলে কোনো কোনো অঞ্চলে এটি ‘কন্যা-জোড়’ নামেও পরিচিত ছিল। হিন্দু সমাজে সাধারণভাবে ‘আশীর্বাদ’ এবং মুসলমান সমাজে ‘বায়নামা’ শব্দের ব্যবহার ছিল। এ ছাড়া ‘মঙ্গলাচরণ’, ‘লগ্নপত্র’, ‘পাটিপত্র’ ইত্যাদি নামও প্রচলিত ছিল। কুমিল্লা অঞ্চলে কনের দেখতে যাওয়ার সময় পান ও ফুল নিয়ে যাওয়ার রীতি প্রচলিত আছে। এর থেকে অনুষ্ঠানটিকে ‘পানফুল’ বলা হয়।

আদর্শ জীবনসঙ্গী খুঁজতে

এই কনে দেখা অনুষ্ঠানের নেপথ্যে যিনি থাকতেন তাকে বলা হতো ঘটক। ঘটকের আভিধানিক অর্থ ঘটনার সংঘটয়িতা। আগেই বলেছি, অতীতে ভারতীয়, বিশেষত বাঙালি সমাজে যুবক-যুবতীদের অবাধ মেলামেশার সুযোগ ছিল না। তখন পূর্বপরিচয়সূত্রে বর-কনের স্বেচ্ছায় বিয়ে সংঘটন সামাজিক বিধিবিধানের পরিপন্থী বলে গণ্য হতো। তাই ঘটকের মাধ্যমেই বিয়ে স্থির হওয়ার রীতি ছিল বহুল প্রচলিত এবং এজন্য সমাজে ঘটকের গুরুত্বও ছিল অনেক। কেউ কেউ এ পেশার দ্বারা জীবিকা নির্বাহও করত। বিবাহকার্য সম্পন্ন হওয়ার পর উভয় পক্ষ থেকে তাদেরকে পুরস্কৃত করা হতো। প্রাচীনকালে শিক্ষিত ও সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তিগণ ঘটকের পেশা গ্রহণ করতেন। তারা ‘কুলাচার্য’ নামে পরিচিত ছিলেন এবং কুলজিগ্রন্থ রচনা করতেন, যার কোনো কোনোটি বাংলার ইতিহাস রচনার উপকরণ হিসেবেও ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। প্রাচীন যুগের কয়েকজন বিশিষ্ট ঘটক হচ্ছেন এডু মিশ্র, হরি মিশ্র, ধ্রুবানন্দ মিশ্র, দেবীবর ঘটক এবং নুলো পঞ্চানন। সমাজে এদের খুবই প্রাধান্য ছিল। বাংলায় কৌলীন্য প্রথার উদ্ভবে এ ঘটকদের একটি বলিষ্ঠ ভূমিকা ছিল বলে মনে করা হয়। পুত্র-কন্যার বিয়ে দেওয়ার সময় লোকে উচ্চবংশ সন্ধান করত, যার তথ্য পাওয়া যেত ঘটকদের কাছ থেকে। ঘটকরা বিভিন্ন বংশের মর্যাদা এবং বিশুদ্ধ কুলীনদের পরিচয় সম্বন্ধে যাবতীয় তথ্য অবগত থাকতেন। তাদের কাছে বিভিন্ন কুলীন বংশের কুলজিও থাকত এবং তাদের মাধ্যমে বংশের কৌলীন্য বহুলাংশে প্রচারিত হতো। বাংলাদেশে বিভিন্ন সম্প্রদায়ের পেশাদার ঘটক ছিল। তবে তাদের মধ্যে ব্রাহ্মণ ঘটকের সংখ্যাই ছিল বেশি। হিন্দু ছাড়া অন্যান্য ধর্মের  লোকদের মধ্যেও ঘটক ছিল। নারী ঘটকের সংখ্যাও কম ছিল না।

ঘটকের মাধ্যমেই বর ও কনেপক্ষ কনে দেখা অনুষ্ঠানের দিনক্ষণ ঠিক করত। উনিশ-বিশ শতকে বাঙালি মুসলমান সমাজে কনে দেখা অনুষ্ঠানের একটা বর্ণনা দেওয়া যাক। অনুষ্ঠানটি হতো কনের বাড়িতে। উপস্থিত থাকত উভয়পক্ষের লোকজন এবং ঘটক। কনেপক্ষ তাদের আদরের মেয়েটিকে সুন্দর করে সাজিয়ে-গুজিয়ে বরপক্ষের লোকদের সামনে হাজির করত। কনের মাথায় লম্বা ঘোমটা। কথা বলে মৃদুস্বরে। বরপক্ষের লোকজন তাকে নানা প্রশ্ন করত। যেমন তোমার নাম কী? কোন ক্লাসে পড়? তোমার বাবার নাম কী? তোমরা কয় ভাইবোন? কোরআন পড়তে জান? সুরা ইয়াসিনের কয় মুবিন (অধ্যায়) মুখস্থ জান? একটা সুরা বল তো? ইত্যাদি ইত্যাদি। এসব প্রশ্ন করত কনে ঠিকমতো কথা বলতে পারে কি-না তা যাচাইয়ের জন্য। কোনো কোনো এলাকায় যাচাই করা হতো মেয়ের বুদ্ধিও। বরপক্ষ থেকে প্রশ্ন আসত, ‘তুমি কি দুই আনা দিয়ে একটি ঘোড়া, এক আঁটি লাকড়ি এবং একটি কাঠের বাক্স কিনে দিতে পারবে?’ মেয়ে বুদ্ধিমান হলে উত্তর দিত, ‘পারব।’ পাল্টা প্রশ্ন আসত, ‘কীভাবে?’ মেয়ের উত্তর, ‘একটা দেশলাই কিনে নেব আমি।’

এভাবেই মেয়েটিকে সব প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে হতো। যেন একটা ইন্টারভিউ বোর্ড। ইন্টারভিউতে পাস করলে বিয়ে, ফেল করলে বিয়ে নয়। বরপক্ষ শুধু প্রশ্ন করেই ক্ষান্ত হতো না, মেয়ের চুল কতটা লম্বা বেণি খুলে ঘুরিয়ে ঘুরিয়ে দেখাতে হতো বরপক্ষকে। মেয়ে ল্যাংড়া কি-না তা দেখার জন্য হাঁটানো হতো তাকে। পায়ের নিচে পানি দিয়ে জায়গাটাকে পিচ্ছিল করে তাকে হাঁটতে বলা হতো। পরীক্ষা করে দেখা হতো পিচ্ছিল জায়গায় মেয়ে ঠিকমতো হাঁটতে পারে কি-না। হাতের কোষে পানি দিয়ে দেখা হতো আঙুলের ফাঁক দিয়ে পানি পড়ে কি-না। মেয়ের দাঁতগুলো মুক্তার মতো ঝকঝকে, না আঁকাবাঁকা, দেখার জন্য হাঁ করতে বলা হতো মেয়েকে। পায়ের কাপড় সরিয়ে দেখা হতো দুই পায়ের পাতা। খুঁটিয়ে দেখা হতো আঙুলগুলো ঠিক আছে কি-না। গায়ের রঙ কালো, শ্যামলা, না ফর্সা, হাতের কবজি পর্যন্ত দেখিয়ে প্রমাণ দিতে হতো মেয়েকে। লেখাপড়া জানলে হাতের লেখা দেখার জন্য তার ঠিকানা লিখতে বলা হতো। ভালো রান্নাবান্না করতে পারে কি-না, কত রকমের আচার ও পিঠা বানাতে পারে, শ্বশুর-শাশুড়ির খেদমত করতে পারবে কি-না এ ধরনের প্রশ্নও করা হতো। সবকিছু ঠিকঠাক থাকলে, বরপক্ষের পছন্দ হলে মেয়ের হাতে গুঁজে দিত নগদ টাকা। কিংবা আঙুলে পরিয়ে দিত আংটি অথবা নাকে নাকফুল। তারপর শুরু হতো পান-চিনি বিতরণ পর্ব।

বর্তমানে আধুনিক শিক্ষা ও বিদেশি সংস্কৃতির প্রভাবে কনে দেখার রীতিনীতির পরিবর্তন ঘটেছে। বিয়ের ক্ষেত্রে এখন ঘটকের প্রয়োজনীয়তা বহুলাংশে হ্রাস পেয়েছে। পেশাগত ঘটক এখন নেই বললেই চলে। শিক্ষিতদের মধ্যে কেউ কেউ আত্মীয়তার সূত্রে কখনো কখনো ঘটকের দায়িত্ব পালন করে। শহর এলাকায়, বিশেষত ঢাকায়, এখন ঘটকালির উদ্দেশে বেশ কটি প্রতিষ্ঠান গড়ে উঠেছে। এমনকি ঘটকালির জন্য ওয়েবসাইট পর্যন্ত খোলা হয়েছে। ছেলে- মেয়েদের ছবি ও পূর্ণ পরিচয়সহ ওয়েবসাইটে বিজ্ঞাপন দিয়ে থাকে। সংবাদপত্রে বিজ্ঞাপন দিয়েও ঘটকালি করা হয়। এ জন্য নির্ধারিত ফি দিয়ে প্রথমে প্রতিষ্ঠানের সদস্য হতে হয় এবং উদ্দেশ্য সফল হলে প্রতিষ্ঠানের প্রাপ্য পরিশোধ করতে হয়। সমাজ পরিবর্তনের এই ছোঁয়া গ্রামাঞ্চলেও পড়েছে। আগের মতো ঘটক আর দেখা যায় না। তাছাড়া বর্তমানে অনেকেই পূর্ব পরিচয়সূত্রে পরিণয়াবদ্ধ হচ্ছে। পেশাদার ঘটক না থাকলেও গ্রামাঞ্চলে এখনও অনেকেই এ দায়িত্ব পালন করে থাকে। তাদেরকে বলা হয় ‘রায়বার’ বা ‘বিয়ের দালাল’ বা ‘উকিল’। এদের কাছ থেকে কনের নাম-ঠিকানা ইত্যাদি সংগ্রহ করে নেয় কনেপক্ষ। গোপনে তারা বরের পরিবারের জাতপাত ও সহায়-সম্পদের খোঁজখবর নেয়। তারপর ঘটকের মাধ্যমে বাজারের হোটেলে বা অন্য কোথাও বরপক্ষের সঙ্গে প্রাথমিক কথাবার্তা হয়। অনেক ক্ষেত্রে হবু বরকেও দেখা হয়। বর পছন্দ ও পরিবার মনঃপূত হলে পাত্রীপক্ষ ঘটকের মাধ্যমে কনে দেখার তারিখ জানিয়ে দেয়। হবু বর মিষ্টি-মিঠাই ইত্যাদি এবং সঙ্গে দুলাভাই, বন্ধু-বান্ধবকে নিয়ে কনের বাড়িতে যায়। মহাধুমধামে হয় ভূরিভোজ। ভোজনপর্বের পর কনে দেখার পালা। কনেপক্ষ যাতে কোনো ফাঁকিজুকি করতে না পারে সেজন্য সঙ্গে নেওয়া হয় দু-একজন নারী। বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রে সম্পর্কে তারা বরের ভাবি বা বড় বোন। নারীরা কনের সবকিছু খুঁটিয়ে দেখে। পছন্দ হলে কনের হাতে আংটি পরিয়ে দেয়।

কনে দেখার বিড়ম্বনাও কম নয়। অনেকে আছে যারা দিনের পর দিন শুধু কনে দেখে বেড়ায়। বরের পছন্দ হলে কনের হয় না। কনের হলে বরের বাবা-মায়ের হয় না। ফলে কনে দেখা চলতেই থাকে। এমন মানুষও আছে আমাদের সমাজে, যারা শত কনে দেখেও নিজের স্ত্রী নির্বাচন করতে পারেন না। এদের অনেকের ক্ষেত্রে শেষ পর্যন্ত বিয়ে করাও সম্ভব হয় না। মানুষ তাদের সন্দেহের চোখে দেখে।

কনে দেখার একটি খরচও রয়েছে। বাবা-মা, বন্ধু-বান্ধবকে নিয়ে কনে দেখার জন্য দূর-দূরান্তে যেতে হয়। গাড়ি ভাড়া, মিষ্টি, উপহার ইত্যাদিতে প্রতিবারই খরচ হয়। ফলে যত বেশি কনে দেখা হবে ততই খরচ। এতেও এক পর্যায়ে হতোদ্যম হয়ে কনে দেখা ছেড়ে দিতে দেখা গেছে অনেক বিয়ের প্রার্থীকে। কারণ এর সাথে সাথে বয়স বেড়ে যায়। কোথাও কোথাও এমন খুঁতখুঁতে পাত্রের ক্ষেত্রে বাবা-মা একজনকে পছন্দ করে তড়িঘড়ি করে বিয়ে দেন। নয়তো ছেলে থেকে যায় অবিবাহিত।

প্রাচীনকালে কনে দেখার যেসব রীতিনীতির কথা বলা হলো সেসব কি এখন নেই? প্রত্যন্ত গ্রামাঞ্চলে এখনো প্রচলিত আছে। এগুলো ভালো কি মন্দ সেই বিতর্কে যাচ্ছি না। রীতিনীতিগুলো ছিল এবং আছে। তবে আগের তুলনায় বহুলাংশে কমেছে। সমাজ বুঝতে পেরেছে কনের বাড়ি গিয়ে কনেকে দেখার এসব রীতিনীতির মধ্য দিয়ে নারীত্বের অপমান হয়। তাই তারা এসব রীতিনীতি বর্জন করতে শুরু করেছে। একুশ শতকের এই কালে বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রে এখন অনুষ্ঠান করে কনে দেখার দরকার হয় না। শহরে তো বেশিরভাগ বিয়ে হয় পাত্র-পাত্রীর পছন্দের ভিত্তিতে। বিয়ের আগেই তাদের মধ্যে প্রেম চলে। তাছাড়া এখন ফেসবুকের জামানা। কনেকে এখন তার বাড়ি গিয়ে দেখতে হয় না, ফেসবুকের মাধ্যমেই সবকিছু জানা সম্ভব।

অদূর ভবিষ্যতে হয়তো কনে দেখার নিয়মটাই উঠে যাবে। ভিডিও কনফারেন্সের মাধ্যমে বর-কনের কথা হবে। তারপর দেখা-সাক্ষাৎ হবে। পারস্পরিক সিদ্ধান্তের ভিত্তিতে একটা সময়ে তারা পরিণয়ে আবদ্ধ হবে। এখনো কি তা হচ্ছে না? হচ্ছে। এই ব্যবস্থাটাও কি ঠিক? হতে পারে। আবার নাও হতে পারে। আসলে সময়ই ঠিক-বেঠিক নির্ধারণ করে দেয়। প্রাচীনকালে যা ঠিক ছিল বর্তমানে তা বেঠিক মনে হচ্ছে। আবার বর্তমানে যা ঠিক ভবিষ্যতে তা বেঠিক মনে হবে। চিরন্তন সত্য বলে কিছু নেই পৃথিবীতে। সবই পরিবর্তনীয়।
